Description
Alcatraz was opened as Federal penitentiary to confine the most hardened criminals in 1934. Men like Doc Barker and Al Capone were a couple of the names of its inmates. Most were incorrigibles sent from other prisons where they had been malcontents and generally a problem for guards and prison administration. Alcatraz was once described by a writer as a psychological straitjacket. It featured the tightest security. Guards confined themselves within a control room where cell block locks were opened and shut by the depression of buttons and by pulling levers. The tight discipline continued 24 hours per day as prison officials rotated in round the clock shifts. Most of the 350 to 400 men housed in Alcatraz went about their 8 hour workdays, reading in their spare time, and causing little discipline problem. Yet there were others, which is the subject of my e-book.
